Our visit to the east coast was a memorable one, one that had many parts. Our first visit was to family in North Andover. We were able to take the boys to to the local amusement park, during the visit.
On our way down to Brooklyn, we stopped in Groton for a day to attend Captain Ken Franklin’s retirement ceremony onboard USS Nautilus.
In the evening we had dinner in Mystic.
The night before the cruise we stayed in Brooklyn, aobut two miles from the Brooklyn Cruise Teminal where we were to board the ship the next morning. We walked down to the East River to Brooklyn Heights and then to underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Then heading back to near our hotel in Downtown Brooklyn we had dinner in a delightful French Restaurant. We got there about 6:30 and it seemed very empty for a Friday night, but by te time we left, it was packed.
It was a spectacular sunrise as we entered Boston Harbor. We passed Logan Airport with aircraft passing overhead.
In the morning we visited Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall
After lunch with Jeff, in the afternoon we visited USS Constitution and Museum.
We arrived in Portland about 7 AM about an hour after sunrise. Our tour of Portland and Kennebunkport left about 45 minutes later. Initially the tour took us on a scenic drive of Portland including the Western Promenade, Congress Street and Eastern Promenade. We then stopped at Fort Williams Park and visit to the picturesque and historical. Head Light, Maine’s oldest lighthouse. This famous landmark, with its white conical tower and charming red roofed Victorian buildings, stands 80 feet above the rocky cliff and 101 feet above the crashing waves below. Commissioned by President Washington in 1797 and dedicated by the Marquis de Lafayette, it was the first lighthouse completed by the newly created U.S. government.
From there we headed south to the charming coastal village of Kennebunkport, the summer home of former President George H. Bush. After a driving tour we walked around the town for about an hour before boarding the bus back to the ship. We were underway about 3:30
7:30pm – 10:00pm Temptations
In St. John we took the Bay of Fundy Coastal Photography Tour. The Bay of Fundy has extraordinarily high tidal range of 43 feet Unfortunately the day started out quite foggy. our first stop was Cape Spencer Lighthouse which was shrouded in fog
and then Mispec Beach which was also quite foggy.
By the time we got to our last stop at Fallsview Park the fog has mostly cleared. From here one can view the Reversing Rapids. That is a phenomenon where the flow of water in the St. John River is reversed due to the high tides in the Bay of Fundy.
From there the tour brought us back to town. we walked around a bit and had lunch there before retuning to the ship.
We arrived in Halifax about noon. The local Porsche Club met the ship in some of their cars.
Our tour of Peggy’s Cove and a coastal scenic was scheduled to leave at 5 PM. We took a short walk around Halifax until it was time for our scenic coastal bus tour to Peggy’s Cove to depart.
but when we got to the tour meeting place we found out that the previous tour was late in returning due to a traffic problem. So we were about 45 minutes late in leaving the port. We got to Peggy’s Cove, a picturesque fishing village at about sunset at 7:36. it was a great opportunity for photos . We arrived back at the ship after the scheduled sailing time, but they waited for our group to return..
